Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
