This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but inside Together resides a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
