Now is ripe to switch Manchester United's formation - the manager states.

Head coach Ruben Amorim contends that altering Manchester United's formation due to media noise would have signaled "the finish" for him.

In a first against Newcastle United, Amorim abandoned his trademark three-at-the-back formation with wide defenders and opted to deploy an standard four-man defense with two central midfielders.

He himself conceded this ultimately transformed into a back six in the latter phase as his team dug in for a win - securing just their second-ever shutout of the campaign.

Although he once memorably said that not even the Pope could compel him to tweak his approach, Amorim maintains the option to play with alternative formations has remained part of his long-term vision.

However, he stresses he could solely implement the change when his team were faring at an acceptable level - or else it would look as if he was succumbing to outside pressure.

"When I arrived here the previous campaign, I recognized perhaps I didn't possess the players to excel in that system, but it was the start of a project," he said.

"The goal was to establish an identity. Currently is a separate moment. We lack a lot of personnel, and we have to adjust, so they see why we are changing.

"The change isn't because of the demands of the media, or the supporters.

"Whenever the press talk about altering the formation repeatedly, I can't change because the squad will believe I'm altering things because of you and I feel that is the end for the coach.

"Once we are playing well in our system, that is the right time to adapt.

"We are going to grow into a better team because when our full complement of personnel return, we are not intending to use a back three all the time."

Availability Challenges Loom Large

Having just two victories in their last eight outings before defeating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is correct to state his side have been playing well.

He is, though, operating with a severely stretched squad, with multiple senior stars already unavailable for the forthcoming home game against winless Wolves.

That total will grow if playmaker Mason Mount fails to recover the injury that led to his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is among those who will be absent for the Wolves clash, even though he is understood to be pressing his manager to let him to make a comeback after his muscle problem.

"Fernandes is already insisting he needs to practice," said Amorim. "However there is absolutely no possibility he is going to feature against Wolves. No way. That's definitive."

Fernandes' Influence Endures

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will likely continue to be a prominent presence, as whereas most unavailable players watch matches from the stands, Fernandes was seen keeping a close eye on the warm-ups from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his captain to carry on providing insight.

"He is a leader," he stated. "He must not be that guy that when he is absent, he's silent and offering advice. He's always vocal. That's why he's the captain.

"He has negative aspects sometimes - the way he moves his arms - but he has a lot of strengths. Even after he recovers, he goes to observe the rest of the squad training. There are a lot of things that go unnoticed.

"I don't know if he wants my position or not, but he's a leader. He is a true captain."

Return Timeline for Injured Personnel

While the precise timeline for Fernandes' return - and that of fellow injured players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unclear, before the conclusion of January, United will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
