Intense Gales Leave Tens of Thousands Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens advised to stay indoors as strong winds batter the country.

Powerful gales hitting velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 households without power and forced authorities to call off more than 100 aircraft departures, as reported by domestic outlets.

The gales are affecting the entire South Island and southern sections of the northern region, per the country's meteorological service.

Officials in New Zealand have announced uncommon severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in key areas including these major districts.

Residents have been urged to avoid going outside, stay off roads, and get ready for additional electricity and network failures.

Broad Damage and Emergency Measures

The electricity loss appears to be affecting households predominantly in the southern region, while officials state that power was being restored progressively.

Local media have stated that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, and power lines and trees have been knocked down by the gusts.

In Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being struck by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a event that was captured in a viral dashcam video.

Flights in and out of the urban area have been halted due to the gusts, and some roads and libraries are also closed.

Meanwhile Canterbury officials have announced a emergency situation, to facilitate disaster response efforts.

Strike Action During Severe Weather

The wild winds on today coincide with tens of thousands of educators, medical professionals and government employees are engaged in what has been called a "major walkout", demanding higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the extreme weather has forced them to alter some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or abandoned.

Like conditions are impacting Australia, ushering in a period of extreme heat to the remote areas.

Agencies have declared fire bans for apprehension regarding forest fires.
