Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
