The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
